The growing need for sustainable energy solutions is getting more and more important to fulfill the demands of a modern society. Not only had the climate conference at Copenhagen nowadays showed the need of a change in thinking of the impact of our energy supply for the future.
The content of this presentation is my research at the Technical University at Munich, the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Science.
The main topics consider heterogeneous as well as homogenous catalysis. The impact of the use of supported ionic liquid catalysts for the low temperature water-gas shift reaction for the use in fuel cells will represent my current work at the Technical University at Munich. A short overview of my work in the United States about basic adsorption studies of the interaction of bio molecules with various supports will show the basic preliminary work of this project. The last topic refers to the importance of cellulose as an abundant and sustainable educt for the production of basic chemicals, especially the conversion of cellulose to 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) via acidic ionic liquids.
